Dr. Nelson Sabates is board-certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology. He received his medical training at UMKC’s School of Medicine. After an internship at Saint Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., he completed his ophthalmology residency at the Dean McGee Eye Institute at the University of Oklahoma School of Medicine in Oklahoma City. He received his subspecialty training in medical and surgical diseases of the retina and vitreous fellowship at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary at Harvard Medical School and a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Schepens Eye Research Institute in Boston.

Dr. Nelson Sabates is a professor of ophthalmology and chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at UMKC’s School of Medicine. He joined Sabates Eye Centers in 1992 and is now the president of the Vision Research Foundation of Kansas City as well as the president and chief executive officer of Sabates Eye Centers.

He lectures both nationally and internationally and has authored numerous presentations, articles and book chapters. Dr. Nelson Sabates is on the editorial board and is also a scientific reviewer for several national publications. Additionally, he is very active in clinical research and clinical trials dedicated to treatments of retinal diseases. He has held numerous leadership positions and served on the board of directors for many institutions locally, regionally and nationally including the Missouri Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons and Schepens International Society. He is also the founder and co-director of the Vision Research Center.

Dr. Nelson Sabates has received numerous awards on a local and national level, among them the Spotlight Award from UMKC’s Alumni Association, the Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and KC Magazine’s “Man of the Year” Award.
