SPECIALIZES IN THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF DISEASES AND SURGERY OF THE RETINA AND VITREOUS.

Dr. Michael Cassell earned his medical degree from the University of Iowa’s College of Medicine. He completed his residency at UMKC School of Medicine’s Department of Ophthalmology, where he served as chief resident. Dr. Cassell practiced his medical and surgical retinal fellowship at the Vitreoretinal Foundation in Memphis, Tenn., where he assisted in more than 1,500 vitreoretinal cases.

Part of the physician team at Sabates Eye Centers since 2004, Dr. Cassell is board-certified in ophthalmology and licensed to practice in both Kansas and Missouri. His special clinical interests include age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy and vitreoretinal surgery. He supervises clinical trials at Sabates Eye Centers and at the Vision Research Center of Kansas City.

Dr. Cassell’s scholastic and professional life has been marked with several distinctions. As an undergraduate at the Central University of Iowa, his achievements included an appointment as a Presidential Scholar and completing the International Studies Program at Universidad de Granada, Spain. Dr. Cassell has been published in prominent ophthalmology journals and has co-authored book chapters in his specialty areas.

In addition to private practice, Dr. Cassell is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at UMKC’s School of Medicine. He also serves as vitreoretinal fellowship program director, associate residency program director, chair of the resident education committee and co-director of the retina/vitreous service.
